About the Artist

Hi, my name is Brianna Rubio, and I’m the artist behind the brand Matchai Designs. Much of my work features abstract creatures, wonky lines and shapes, and lots of vibrant colors. I create art as a means to express my emotions, recount experiences, and turn everyday things into something unknown.

As a self-taught contemporary artist, I don’t really like the idea of my art fitting neatly inside of a categorized box. Nonetheless, I might loosely describe my art style as abstract expressionism with pop art influences. Much of my work may also be described as outsider art, lowbrow art, or simply “bad art”. This style is my attempt to challenge traditional artistic conventions. In a less meaningful way, it is also the way I make art accessible to myself as a disabled person. If my art had to be perfect, I would never create anything at all.

I admire work by artists like Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Memphis Group, Norman Rockwell, Dr. Seuss, Helen Frankenthaler, Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, Rene Magritte, Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dalí, and the list goes on (in no particular order).

As an artist, I don’t have the time or energy to care if people like my art. I don’t even like my art sometimes. I care that I create and I have ultimately contributed something to the world that will outlast my physical presence. My art typically makes people think, “What the fuck?” and I’m perfectly okay with that.
